Alberta Livestock Feed Assistance initiative about to open

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Cattle producers will soon be able to apply for feed assistance and should ensure their paperwork is ready.

Emmet Hanrahan, Vice-President of Product Innovation with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), confirms they are working to get applications out and aiming for September 7, to have an application available for producers.

“Ninety-four dollars a head is the first payment, and then producers that have costs in excess of the $94 a head can apply for a second payment later into the fall. The program is designed for breeding females and it`s intended to help maintain the herd size in Alberta.”

Hanrahan outlined what producers need to do to qualify for assistance.

“So for the initial payment of $94, you just have to have an account of what inventory you`ve got on hand on August 6 and applications will be available on AFSC Connects. Producers that aren`t an existing client of AFSC should visit our website and find out how to get on and get singed up for that platform once the application is available. If they`re signed up and they have their direct deposit information, payment will flow quite quickly.”

There will also be a secondary payment and Hanrahan provides information on that as well.

“The secondary payment is up to $106 a head and is based primarily on a feed-need model. In other words, producers were forced to take animals off of pasture land early, then the grazing days that they lost would be factored into that feed-need calculation.”

The feed-need model of additional feed, as well as temporary fencing, temporary water or transportation expenses, can also be factored into the application to apply for compensation on those expenses as well.
