Construction work to begin on Festival Square in downtown Lethbridge

Sep 7, 2021 | 7:14 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Construction on Festival Square is set to get underway in Lethbridge Tuesday.

Starting September 7, 6 Street South will be closed from the intersection at 3 Avenue to the laneway just south of the Downtown BRZ office (309 6 Street S).

The City of Lethbridge notes the laneway will stay open and there will be turnarounds in place on 6 Street and 3 Avenue. This project will be in progress for the next two to three months.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution and follow posted detours.

Back in July, Lethbridge City Council voted 6-3 to proceed with a revised plan for Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP) funded projects, including the $1.71 million Festival Square Market Plaza, which will allow Festival Square to proceed, without any City funding.

The new Festival Square Market Plaza will feature an interactive stage, entry signs, decorative column lighting, programmable lighting and site furniture, as well as water and wastewater servicing and lane rehab.

NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

In addition to work beginning on Festival Square, starting at 7:30 a.m., Highway 3 near Scenic Drive N. will have reduced lane capacity in order to facilitate work by Volker Stevin on a new pedestrian bridge.

There will be rotating single lane closures on Highway 3 each day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This will start with the outside westbound lane. Highway 3 is anticipated to be fully opened by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 10, weather permitting.

Signage for detours around the work site will be placed at the adjacent intersections approaching the zones.
