1,609 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Alberta Wednesday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its updated statistics on COVID-19 cases for Wednesday, September 15, covering the last 24 hours.

1,609 new infections were confirmed across Alberta. That brings the province’s case total to 273,820 with 18,421 of those listed as active. There have been 252,904 recoveries.

The South Health Zone recorded 150 new infections.

877 Albertans are in hospital with 218 in intensive care (ICU). 24 deaths were reported since Tuesday’s update, bringing the total count to 2,495 deaths related to COVID-19 in the province.

One new death was reported in South Lethbridge.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health said on social media that of the 218 people in ICU, 92.3 per cent are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated with one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. She stated that, “today’s numbers underscore how serious COVID-19 can be, and the need for every Albertan to take steps now to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our health-care system by getting vaccinated.

Dr. Hinshaw, along with Health Minister Tyler Shandro and Premier Jason Kenney will be providing an update on COVID-19 this evening (Sept. 15) at 6 p.m. MST. The live-stream of that announcement can be viewed through the Government of Alberta website here.

5,299,380 tests have been completed, with 15,831 done on September 14. In total, 2,370,186 people have been tested in Alberta.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 107,536 cases, 5,297 active
    • 249 in hospital, 67 in ICU
    • 745 deaths (eight new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 89,613 cases, 5,408 active
    • 303 in hospital, 93 in ICU
    • 1,142 deaths (five new)
  • North Zone – 33,796 cases, 3,254 active
    • 98 in hospital, 14 in ICU
    • 231 deaths (three new)
  • Central Zone – 25,930 cases, 2,620 active
    • 141 in hospital, 21 in ICU
    • 201 deaths (six new)
  • South Zone – 16,883 cases, 1,805 active
    • 86 in hospital, 23 in ICU
    • 176 deaths (two new)

There are 62 cases in zones that are ‘unknown’, with 37 of those listed as active.

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone.

  • Lethbridge – 5,567 cases (47 new), 335 active, 44 deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 2,069 cases (10 new), 118 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,830 cases (21 new), 119 active, 12 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,661 cases (14 new), 93 active, 27 deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 3,074 cases (40 new), 574 active, 45 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,752 cases (14 new), 108 active, 16 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,475 cases (six new), 114 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,330 cases (four new), 129 active, 23 deaths (one new)
  • M.D. of Taber – 837 cases (14 new), 177 active, seven deaths
  • Cypress County – 624 cases (six new), 119 active, one death
  • County of Warner – 541 cases (nine new), 49 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 464 cases (two new), 56 active, six deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 401 cases (four new), 56 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 329 cases (one new), 39 active, four deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 193 cases (two new), 19 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 113 cases (one new), 15 active, one death
  • Waterton – Seven cases, zero active, zero deaths
