More than 20K active COVID cases in Alberta, 22 deaths reported this weekend

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics from the past three days.

In that time, a total of 4,633 cases were confirmed for an average of 1,544 new cases per day. Throughout the pandemic, 282,191 positive tests have been identified.

AHS reports that over 99 per cent of new cases were among those who are unvaccinated, 76 per cent of currently-active cases are unvaccinated, and 79 per cent of those in hospital with COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

20,614 cases are currently active in Alberta while 259,032 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 520 people tested positive over the last three days, or 173 on average each day. Locally, 200 people contracted COVID in Medicine Hat and 92 in Lethbridge.

Active infections across the region have surpassed two thousand, rising by 166 since LNN’s COVID-19 update on Friday. Active cases were also up in both of the region’s largest cities.

Since Friday’s update, 22 Albertans died from COVID with eight in the Edmonton Zone, seven in the Central Zone, four in the North Zone, two in the South Zone, and one in the Calgary Zone. To date, 2,545 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of the M.D. of Taber and Cypress County.

Provincially, 954 patients are currently hospitalized including 216 who have been admitted to intensive care.

  • Calgary Zone – 109,534 cases, 5,597 active
    • 256 in hospital, 63 in ICU
    • 753 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 90,703 cases, 5,615 active
    • 326 in hospital, 99 in ICU
    • 1,154 deaths (eight new)
  • North Zone – 35,353 cases, 3,723 active
    • 118 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 240 deaths (four new)
  • Central Zone – 27,738 cases, 3,551 active
    • 162 in hospital, 18 in ICU
    • 215 deaths (seven new)
  • South Zone – 17,790 cases, 2,085 active
    • 92 in hospital, 24 in ICU
    • 183 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Lethbridge – 5,732 cases (92 new), 391 active, 44 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,123 cases (31 new), 123 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,888 cases (33 new), 144 active, 12 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,714 cases (28 new), 120 active, 27 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 3,392 cases (200 new), 650 active, 48 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,823 cases (40 new), 144 active, 16 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,522 cases (21 new), 131 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,398 cases (28 new), 149 active, 23 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 906 cases (43 new), 203 active, nine deaths (one new)
  • Cypress County – 673 cases (32 new), 112 active, two deaths (one new)
  • County of Warner – 568 cases (18 new), 64 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 481 cases (five new), 57 active, seven deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 418 cases (seven new), 58 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 346 cases (11 new), 42 active, four deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 207 cases (seven new), 29 active, three deaths
