Alberta making up 40% of all new COVID deaths in Canada, 36% of cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics from the past three days (Friday-Sunday).

In that time, 5,181 cases were confirmed across the province, or an average of 1,727 per day, bringing the total to date up to 293,538. Of those, 21,307 cases are active while 269,586 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 526 people tested positive for a daily average of 175. Medicine Hat recorded 142 new infections while Lethbridge had 98 and Lethbridge County had 48.

Active infections across the region went up by 161.

Over the course of the past three days, 23 Albertans died from COVID-19 with seven in the Central Zone, five in the Edmonton Zone, four each in the South and Calgary Zones, and three in the North Zone. To date, 2,645 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

Over the past 14 days, Health Canada has reported 450 deaths related to COVID-19 around the country. While Alberta has approximately 11.65 per cent of the national population, it also saw 39.55 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths.

As well, of Canada’s 60,714 new cases in the last two weeks, 36.76 per cent came from Alberta.

Provincially, 1,063 patients are currently hospitalized including 265 who have been admitted to intensive care.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 112,180 cases, 5,295 active
    • 273 in hospital, 86 in ICU
    • 773 deaths (four new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 94,569 cases, 5,430 active
    • 342 in hospital, 113 in ICU
    • 1,173 deaths (five new)
  • North Zone – 37,613 cases, 3,988 active
    • 133 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 259 deaths (three new)
  • Central Zone – 30,057 cases, 4,235 active
    • 184 in hospital, 23 in ICU
    • 246 deaths (seven new)
  • South Zone – 19,047 cases, 2,317 active
    • 131 in hospital, 30 in ICU
    • 194 deaths (four new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past three days:

  • Lethbridge – 6,003 cases (98 new), 484 active, 45 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,201 cases (27 new), 139 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,978 cases (42 new), 168 active, 13 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,814 cases (29 new), 171 active, 27 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 3,760 cases (142 new), 696 active, 50 deaths (one new)
  • Brooks – 1,919 cases (58 new), 176 active, 18 deaths (one new)
  • Lethbridge County – 1,622 cases (48 new), 160 active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,425 cases (five new), 120 active, 23 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 997 cases (40 new), 183 active, 10 deaths
  • Cypress County – 729 cases (18 new), 113 active, three deaths
  • County of Warner – 614 cases (23 new), 79 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 513 cases (four new), 55 active, eight deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 443 cases (10 new), 54 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 377 cases (14 new), 52 active, four deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 250 cases (18 new), 63 active, four deaths (one new)
  • Crowsnest Pass – 125 cases (three new), 15 active, one death
  • Waterton – Seven cases, zero active, zero deaths
