Davey Wiggers running for Lethbridge City Council

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Davey Wiggers is vying for your vote in the October Municipal Election.

Wiggers says unity is one of his large stance points and council needs to work as a team. He wants his top priorities to be addressed if elected which include:

Festival Square:

“Council recently approved a $1.7M project cost for Festival Square. The province approved a $900K budget. The lowest bid, however, was $1,385,000.00.

Already $500K over budget, Council then elected to spend another $400K on top. Transferring money from the airport CIP budget, where costs from one of its projects came in under budget. Rather than applying that surplus from one airport project to another.”

YQL – Lethbridge Airport:

“40 years ago, this was my immigration port of entry. Today it looks much the same as it did then. How much economic development has been lost as a consequence of delayed upgrades?”

Downtown:

“Election after election, candidates promise to make the downtown core a priority. Every time council gives way to corporate interests elsewhere in the city. Apartments, Condos, and live/work buildings get feet on the street, wrap around services attracted back to the area.

These will not just affect economic development downtown, but will also allow for more resource availability for the downtrodden.”

Police:

“LPS has consistently been asked to do more with less, Council cutting the LPS budget by $1,000,000.00 dollars through 2022.

More than 80% of their budget goes to boots on the ground, fewer dollars = fewer officers = more crime. Lethbridge already doesn’t stand well in the crime index, why would we make that worse? Intentionally.”

Other Areas of Concern include:

  • Affordable Housing
  • Municipal Harm Reduction Strategies
  • Public Transit Plans
  • Capital Improvement Plan
  • Bicycle Lanes
  • Councillor-A-Large vs. Ward systems
  • Other Areas of Concern
  • Energy Efficiency Strategies
  • 3rd Bridge – Chinook Trail
  • Urban Livestock

“My platform is to be a servant of the community. I’d like to see the community drive the campaign, state the issues. I want to see more community involvement in the process of electing their community leaders. With only 27% of eligible voters turning out to the last election, getting the voters out should be most important,” Wiggers states.

Prior to general election day on October 18, there will be three weekends of advance voting:

  • October 1, 2 – City Hall (Downtown)
  • October 8, 9, 10 – Exhibition Park drive-through (East)
  • October 14, 15, 16 – ATB Centre (West)
