LETHBRIDGE, AB – Anyone seeking legal advice can now register for the Ask-A-Lawyer event.

Hosted by Lethbridge Legal Guidance and supported by Lethbridge Lawyers, the event gives residents the opportunity to take part in a half-hour consult with a volunteer lawyer to discuss any legal matters on their mind. There is no income cap for the service.

Ask-A-Lawyer takes place October 22, right before the start of Access to Justice Week in Alberta, which runs from October 25 to 31 this year. The week focuses on making sure everyone has access to the justice system.

Appointments must be booked in advance, in order for appointments to be scheduled accordingly. Community Programs Manager Kathryn Linder told LNN that the hope is participants book before the Thanksgiving holiday.

She said, “we plan to start booking for this just after we get back from the Thanksgiving holiday. People can call during that week, but the earlier they call, the more likely they are to get the spot.”

Participants can call 403-380-6338 to book their spot before a time is scheduled on the 22.

Linder said the initiative offers many benefits to residents, noting that, “sometimes people come in and they just want to know if this is something worth pursuing in the court system.”

“You can talk to a lawyer and find out whether something is worth pursuing or get enough information to proceed on your own. Sometimes people just have legal questions [and] they don’t want to spend a lot of money to get their answers but this is an opportunity to speak to a lawyer, get a little bit of direction and information and then make a decision on whether or not you want to pay for a retainer and move forward with it.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, appointments will be conducted over the phone, however, Linder said different arrangements can be made if required.
