Appointments now open for Lethbridge’s Fall Leaf Collection Program

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge’s Fall Leaf Collection Program is now underway. Between October 4 and November 12, citizens can request an appointment to have their bagged leaves picked up.

Residents can set up a pick-up by calling Lethbridge 311, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Staff will submit the request and provide callers with a date when they can expected their leaves to be collected.

Leaves have to be put into paper yard waste bags in the area where garbage is normally collected roughly 24 hours ahead of their scheduled pick-up time and date. Bags must be placed 1.5 metres away from waste collection cards. Residents whose waste collection is in front of their home are asked to place leaf bags where their property meets the sidewalk.

Only paper yard waste bags are accepted for the program because all leaves and bags will be composted together, which the city says will help reduce landfill waste. There is no limit for the number of bags which may be set out for collection, but filled bags cannot exceed a weight limit of 25 pounds (10 kilograms) each. Residents can request up to two collections.

Last year, the program helped divert 70 tonnes of leaves away from the city landfill, helping to create nutrient rich compost to be used in Lethbridge parks.

If residents choose not to use the program, they can mulch their leaves, backyard compost them or take them to any of the three City of Lethbridge Yard Waste Recycling sites, which remain open until November 14.
