Active COVID cases falling in Alberta, but hospitalizations and deaths remain high

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

1,263 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 305,765. Of those, 18,912 cases are active while 284,049 people have recovered.

Over the past week, the number of active cases provincially fell by 1,394, or 6.8 per cent.

In the South Zone, 136 people tested positive with 45 in Medicine Hat, 19 in the M.D. of Taber, and 18 in Lethbridge.

Active infections across the region fell by 70.

Since yesterday’s update, 27 Albertans died from COVID with eight in the North Zone, seven in the Central Zone, five each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones, and two in the South Zone. To date, 2,804 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of Lethbridge County and Cypress County.

Provincially, 1,083 patients are currently hospitalized including 247 who have been admitted to intensive care.

  • Calgary Zone – 115,143 cases, 4,629 active
    • 273 in hospital, 78 in ICU
    • 795 deaths (five new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 97,305 cases, 4,455 active
    • 309 in hospital, 113 in ICU
    • 1,210 deaths (five new)
  • North Zone – 40,189 cases, 3,801 active
    • 155 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 293 deaths (eight new)
  • Central Zone – 32,688 cases, 3,955 active
    • 214 in hospital, 21 in ICU
    • 287 deaths (seven new)
  • South Zone – 20,388 cases, 2,054 active
    • 132 in hospital, 25 in ICU
    • 219 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past 24 hours:

  • Lethbridge – 6,318 cases (18 new), 453 active, 46 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,309 cases (11 new), 148 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,076 cases (one new), 152 active, 14 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,925 cases (six new), 152 active, 27 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,086 cases (45 new), 540 active, 61 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,002 cases (three new), 163 active, 20 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,729 cases (10 new), 170 active, 15 deaths (one new)
  • Cardston County – 1,600 cases (five new), 170 active, 26 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,098 cases (19 new), 157 active, 11 deaths
  • Cypress County – 783 cases (10 new), 81 active, six deaths (one new)
  • County of Warner – 661 cases (eight new), 72 active, three deaths
