YORK, ONT. — Police north of Toronto have charged a family doctor from Medicine Hat with sexual assault.

York Regional Police say a man reported he had been sexually assaulted as a young child in 1988 and ’89 and the investigation uncovered a second victim.

Police say Ian Gebhardt, who is 59, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference of a person under 14.

The accused was known to work for volunteer organizations with children in York Region in the ‘80s.

In a release, York regional police say Gebhardt has been a resident of Medicine Hat since 2007.

Gebhardt went to trial in Medicine Hat in 2018 on a charge of sexually assaulting a patient, but the charge was stayed.
