Rufa Doria – seeking a bid for a city Council seat

Oct 6, 2021 | 2:00 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Rufa Doria is a well educated lady who says she loves Lethbridge and wants to be a part of helping the city to flourish.

Rufa immigrated to Canada from the Philipines in 2004. She achieved a PhD in Bioresource Engineering from McGill University before she moved to Lethbridge. She’s currently the president of the Filipino Canadian Association of Lethbridge, and up to 2019, she served as vice-president of the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association. Until June of this year, she was also a member of the Irrigation Council in Alberta .

“I’m running for City Council because I have never seen identities and experiences like mine represented at the city level. As Lethbridge is diversifying and growing, I believe the people in positions of leadership should also reflect a professional representation from the population.”

“Also, I want to restore the ABC’s of leadership to Lethbridge city Council:

A – For attention to the core of community problems and the voices of our citizens,

B – For business-minded decisions and policies to support our local economy,

C – For community, bringing people together

This is what prompted me to run for a seat on city council.”

Her platform is straight forward – Community is what she stands for and she wants to see safety in our city and supportive policies to stop crime.

“I want to feel safe walking our streets.”

“I’m also an immigration consultant here, I own my business, and I want to see our international students and the immigrant communities to see that Lethbridge is truly a great city.”

“In terms of the economy, I want to see policies that support local businesses, so that Lethbridge is a desireable destination for entrepreneurs like myself.”

And, finally, the main reason she is running is diversity and representation.

“As Lethbridge is growing and diversifying I will support initiatives and strategies that support our under-served and marginalized. For me, it is imperative that diverse groups get involved and participate locally in order to create a more cohesive and united Lethbridge.”

“These people need to participate and that is why I am bringing the voice for people who are not only from different ethnicities but, for everyone. I want to hear their voices, so that we can have educated decisions on what is good for the city of Lethbridge.”

Having been the president of an association, Rufa believes she has the skill to listen to people, hear their voices and concerns, and then let them know the educated decision on how to go about dealing with an issue.

“The future of Lethbridge depends on how we shape it today – it is about coming together, broadening our horizons, new ideas and, of course, we have to take action. So that is why I want to let you know what I stand for. My platform is very simple and straight forward – help the community and businesses – I want Lethbridge to be a very desireable destination for entrepreneurs, diversity and representation.”

“So, vote for the ABC’s of Lethbridge – vote for Rufa Doria!”
