AHS records 38 COVID deaths in one day, but active cases down 25%

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

652 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 312,285. Of those, 14,218 cases are active while 295,166 people have recovered.

Over the last week, active infections have fallen by 4,694, or about 25 per cent.

In the South Zone, 92 people tested positive with 28 in Lethbridge, 17 in the County of Newell, and 13 each in Medicine Hat and the M.D. of Taber.

Since yesterday’s update, 38 Albertans died from COVID with 11 in the Central Zone, 10 in the Edmonton Zone, eight each in the Calgary and North Zones, and one in the South Zone. To date, 2,901 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of North Lethbridge.

Since January 1, 2021, AHS says about 77.4 per cent of COVID-19 deaths were among those who had no vaccine protection.

Provincially, 1,027 patients are currently hospitalized including 236 who have been admitted to intensive care.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 116,778 cases, 3,594 active
    • 243 in hospital, 75 in ICU
    • 810 deaths (eight new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 98,800 cases, 3,281 active
    • 317 in hospital, 108 in ICU
    • 1,241 deaths (10 new)
  • North Zone – 41,613 cases, 2,854 active
    • 161 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 311 deaths (eight new)
  • Central Zone – 33,956 cases, 2,908 active
    • 187 in hospital, 15 in ICU
    • 308 deaths (11 new)
  • South Zone – 21,091 cases, 1,587 active
    • 119 in hospital, 25 in ICU
    • 231 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past 24 hours:

  • Lethbridge – 6,521 cases (28 new), 416 active, 49 deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 2,372 cases (six new), 138 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,161 cases (nine new), 145 active, 16 deaths (one new)
    • South Lethbridge – 1,980 cases (13 new), 135 active, 28 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,229 cases (13 new), 363 active, 67 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,043 cases (six new), 98 active, 21 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,780 cases (five new), 118 active, 16 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,673 cases (nine new), 132 active, 27 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,152 cases (13 new), 131 active, 11 deaths
  • Cypress County – 804 cases (one new), 52 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 687 cases (six new), 59 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 568 cases (one new), 37 active, nine deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 497 cases (four new), 47 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 433 cases (17 new), 43 active, five deaths
