Alberta to gain three new seats in House of Commons, likely starting in 2024

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In the next few years, Albertans will have more representation in the federal government.

Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Stephane Perrault announced that the total number of seats allocated to provinces and territories in the House of Commons will increase from 338 to 342.

The change will take place following the next decennial redistribution of seats, which will happen in 2024 at the earliest.

The redistribution reflects changes in Canada’s population over a 10-year period.

Currently, Alberta has 11.66 per cent of the nation’s population, and with 34 seats in Parliament, we have 10.15 per cent of the seats.

When the reallocation occurs, the province will gain three seats, meaning 10.91 per cent of MPs will hail from Alberta.

B.C. and Ontario will have one additional seat each while Quebec will lose one.

By March-August 2022, it is expected that the proposed riding boundary changes will be published for public viewing. The changes will be implemented by April 2024 at the earliest.
