Jenn Schmidt-Rempel “honoured and humbled” to be a Lethbridge City Councillor-elect

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Jenn Schmidt-Rempel is gearing up to serve her first term on city council.

In Monday’s municipal elections, the unofficial results show that she secured the third most votes out of the 32 candidates running for council at 10,463, or 6.34 per cent.

A little over 12 hours removed from learning the outcome, she said she was feeling excited, honoured, and humbled.

An election victory, however, was not something that she realistically expected could happen until recently.

“Just based on the positive feedback I was getting all around – emails, phone calls, social media messages, people calling to tell me that they voted for me – late last week, it really started to hit me that it was a possibility that I could be elected to council, so I was really excited about that.”

We had previously talked to Schmidt-Rempel about her platform, which consisted of four main pillars: people, service, business, and community.

Now that the election is over, she told LNN that addressing the often-divisive nature of city council will be job number one.

“First off, the entire council is going to need to come together and we’re going to need to set the tone for the city. Previous council, there was certainly, you know, looking at that division everyone talks about, I think the first job our new council is going to have is we’re going to have to come together and we’re going to have to set the tone that we’re working together and we’re collaborating together and that we’re not going to let division come between us.”

From there, she hopes to dive deeply into community safety, navigating the rest of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the city can help to set up Lethbridge for future success.

The official election results are expected to be ready on Friday. Next Monday, elected members will be sworn into office.
