Rajko Dodic wins the most votes for Lethbridge City Council in unofficial count

LETHBRIDGE, AB – “Absolutely flabbergasted” were the words Rajko Dodic used to describe what he felt when he saw the final vote tally.

In Monday’s municipal election, the unofficial results show Dodic got more votes than all of the 31 others vying for a seat on Lethbridge City Council.

He won a projected 12,079 votes, or 7.32 per cent.

“I wasn’t expecting that. I felt fairly confident that I would, at least, make the top 10, but I never thought I would top the polls in terms of the number of votes. Obviously, I’m very humbled by that.”

Following the swearing-in ceremony this coming Monday, Dodic says job number one is to have a thorough look through the city’s current operating budget and capital improvement program to “see if there’s anything there that really jumps up in my mind.”

As well, navigating through the Delta variant of COVID-19 is a top concern.

“There was a while back when Lethbridge and the provincial government were not in lockstep in terms of how to deal with it. Right now, the provincial government is doing the things necessary to deal with COVID and I want to make sure Lethbridge is parallel with them to make sure that we stay on the right track, at least as far as dealing with COVID-19 among our residents.”

The majority of the new city council will come into the new term with at least some experience. For Dodic, he served one term as mayor between 2010 and 2013 and was a councillor for two terms prior to that.

He told LNN that he has already met and is looking forward to working with the three newcomers – Jenn Schmidt-Rempel, John Middleton-Hope, and Nick Paladino.
