Lethbridge councillor-elect Mark Campbell says collaboration will be key for upcoming term

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Mark Campbell says he is thankful that Lethbridge residents wanted him back for a second term with city council.

In the unofficial results from Monday’s municipal election, Campbell received an estimated 9,117 votes. The councillor-elect told LNN it should be an interesting council term with some new faces sitting at the table.

He remarked, “I think the previous council left this council in a good situation to be able to work together.”

“I don’t see a lot of changes. I love our new Standing Committees that were developed… [and] the new way we do the budget is a positive step.”

Campbell said the campaign for this municipal election was different from years past, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that, “I love to be out with people and we just weren’t able to do that as it was in the previous election, [so] that was weird.”

Going into a new term, Campbell said collaboration between mayor and council will be key.

“As any council – let’s get along, let’s talk about the issues, let’s discuss, let’s have a debate and then get to a consensus and then you vote! Then, the democratic process takes place and for whatever we’re voting on, you know, that’s what we decide on.”

He said he’s looking forward “to all kinds of input and coming to a great plan,” referring to a strategic plan for the council term.

Campbell gave praise to Lethbridge residents for going out and voting.

“I have to give big kudos to City [of Lethbridge] administration for the advance polling that took place – really, really great and kudos to the people of Lethbridge who came out much stronger than the last election, so it’s been great.”

The councillor-elect added, “thanks for those who voted for me and if you didn’t vote for me, that’s okay too, that’s what democracy is all about.”

Election results come official at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22.
