Active COVID cases now half of what they were one month ago in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

656 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 319,176. Of those, 10,037 cases are active while 306,113 people have recovered.

There are now less than half as many active cases in Alberta as there were exactly one month ago. In our update on September 22, the province had 20,304 active.

In the South Zone, 76 people tested positive with 18 in Lethbridge and 16 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections across the region have fallen by 45.

Since yesterday’s update, 12 Albertans died from COVID with four each in the Central and North Zones, two in the Edmonton Zone, and one each in the South and Calgary Zones. To date, 3,026 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of Cardston County.

Provincially, 889 patients are currently hospitalized including 191 who have been admitted to intensive care. Over the last month, the number of Albertans hospitalized with COVID decreased by 151.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 118,487 cases, 2,554 active
    • 208 in hospital, 51 in ICU
    • 827 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 100,430 cases, 2,355 active
    • 265 in hospital, 87 in ICU
    • 1,262 deaths (two new)
  • North Zone – 43,092 cases, 2,112 active
    • 132 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 341 deaths (four new)
  • Central Zone – 35,332 cases, 1,940 active
    • 168 in hospital, 20 in ICU
    • 346 deaths (four new)
  • South Zone – 21,787 cases, 1,066 active
    • 116 in hospital, 24 in ICU
    • 250 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past 24 hours:

  • Lethbridge – 6,745 cases (18 new), 331 active, 50 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,465 cases (six new), 129 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,225 cases (five new), 101 active, 17 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,048 cases (seven new), 105 active, 28 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,358 cases (16 new), 208 active, 74 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,067 cases (two new), 38 active, 23 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 1,861 cases (four new), 99 active, 17 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,719 cases (six new), 75 active, 32 deaths (one new)
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,196 cases (six new), 88 active, 12 deaths
  • Cypress County – 815 cases (one new), 22 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 719 cases (four new), 52 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 594 cases (three new), 34 active, nine deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 515 cases (two new), 28 active, six deaths
  • County of Newell – 457 cases (nine new), 40 active, six deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 323 cases, 20 active, five deaths
