Lethbridge Airport searching for Indigenous artists to design local artwork

Oct 22, 2021 | 10:57 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Airport, through the City of Lethbridge is looking for an indigenous artist to design a Land Acknowledgement and Territory Welcome art installation for the Lethbridge Airport.

Artwork chosen will be installed at the airport in conjunction with a series of major renovations which will “improve the customer experience and position the airport as a major driver of the regional economy,” the city release states.

The city says the purpose of the Land Acknowledgement and Territory Welcome art installation is to:

“Provide a highly visual, engaging, and distinctly Niitsitapi | Blackfoot welcome to travelers visiting or returning home to Sikóóhkotok | Lethbridge.”

“The art installation will build upon and complement other (and future) “Indigenous placemaking” efforts led by the City of Lethbridge across the community which seek to provide site-specific representations of Siksikaitsitapi | Blackfoot Confederacy Territory and encourage community gathering, shared understanding, and reconciliation.”

The competition is split up into two stages:

Stage 1 requires artists to submit an Expression of Interest, no actual design is required.

A maximum of five artists will be shortlisted and asked to prepare designs in Stage 2 of the competition.

The deadline to submit Expressions of Interest is November 17, 2021, at 4:30 pm.

Stage 2 final designs from shortlisted artists will be required by January 3, 2022, at 4:30 pm.

Detailed submission information for the Airport Land Acknowledgement and Territory Welcome opportunity is available at: publicartlethbridge.ca/current-calls.
