LETHBRIDGE, AB. — After being shut-out 7-0 in back-to-back games, it was hoped the Hurricanes would be able to turn things around when they hosted the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday (Nov 5) night.

However, the first period got off to a rough start in a penalty-plagued game.

Within the first two minutes, the Warriors were tapped for game delay, followed within minutes by another player sent to the box for tripping.

At the mid-point in the frame, the Canes’ Logan McCutcheon was taken out for interference.

The first goal didn’t come until the 13:00 minute mark, off the stick of Warrior Jagger Firkus.

Action picked up with a succession of penalties at 17:39. Moose Jaw player Riley Niven was off to the penalty box for roughing. Not to be outdone, the Canes’ Joe Arntsen also skated off for Roughing, while Ty Nash was close behind for Boarding.

Just seconds before the buzzer ended the first period, Warrior’s Robert Baco pulled down a Roughing penalty, as well as a 10-minute Misconduct. The Canes’ Nolan Bentham was also out for Roughing.

The first period concluded with a 1-0 score for Mosse Jaw. The visitors racked up 20-penalty minutes, while the Canes were scoreless with eight minutes.

The second frame was held to three minor penalties and started with a man advantage for the Hurricanes, due to Robert Baco’s 10-minute misconduct. Unfortunately, no goal for the Canes.

The Warriors’ Jagger Firkus, however, tucked in his second goal of the game on a power play at the 5:33 mark.

The first goal for the home team came at 11:35, off the stick of Noah Boyko, who notched his fifth of the season on a powerplay. The middle period ended with a 2-1 lead for Moose Jaw.

The final 20 minutes of play opened with a hooking penalty for Moose Jaw. The continuing string of penalties was interrupted at 6:49, as Moose Jaw’s Jagger Firkus tipped in his third goal of the night for Hat Trick, giving the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

Heightened angst took control at 11:36 as Warrior Majid Kaddoura and the Canes Ty Nash were pulled from the ice for major fighting penalties. It was immediately followed by a tripping penalty for Ty Nash.

Amongst all the penalties, Moose Jaw’s Eric Alarie was able to slip the puck into the Canes’ zone and through the pipes, taking the score to 4-1 for the Warriors and giving them the win.

The Hurricanes outshot the Warriors 30-29 and were 1/5 on the powerplay, while Moose Jaw recorded 29 penalty minutes to the Canes’ 23. The Canes are 5-6-0 on the season with three consecutive losses.

Saturday (Nov 6) night, the Canes are in Swift Current to play the Broncos.
