Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region continues to see Alberta’s lowest jobless rate at 5.3% in October

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The unemployment rate for the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region saw another dip last month.

The rate was 5.3 per cent in October 2021, compared to 5.7 per cent in September. Overall, the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region has the lowest jobless rate in all of Alberta.

The province’s unemployment rate as a whole last month was 7.6 per cent, a drop from 8.1 per cent in September. In October of 2020, the rate was a much higher 10.8 per cent.

Below is each economic region’s jobless rate for October, with September’s rate in parenthesis:

  • Camrose-Drumheller: 10.2 per cent (9.2)
  • Calgary: 8.2 per cent (9.2)
  • Red Deer: 7.8 per cent (9.0)
  • Edmonton: 7.7 per cent (8.3)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 7.1 per cent (7.1)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 6.2 per cent (6.1)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 5.3 per cent (5.7)

Province-wide, the unemployment rate for youth (ages 15-24, male and female) was 12.1 per cent in October, with the rate at 6.9 per cent for adults (ages 25 and up, male and female).

NATIONAL ECONOMY

Nationally, the Canadian economy added 31,000 jobs in October, according to Statistics Canada.

The unemployment rate for the country last month was 6.7 per cent, down from 6.9 in September. That marks the fifth straight monthly decline.
