Amazon Web Services announces multi-billion dollar investment in Alberta

CALGARY, AB – Amazon is making its mark on Alberta.

One of its subsidiaries, Amazon Web Services Inc., has announced that it will be making a multi-billion dollar investment on a new cloud computing operation in Calgary. It is estimated that the deal will result in close to 1,000 new jobs being created through a total investment of $4.3 billion.

The Government of Alberta said that’s perhaps the largest single investment in the history of the province’s tech sector.

Premier Jason Kenney said, “this investment is another example of the rapidly expanding technology and innovation sector in Alberta and yet more proof that Alberta’s Recovery Plan is working to create jobs and diversify the economy.”

“Today’s historic investment by Amazon Web Services adds to the fantastic momentum in Alberta’s tech sector, and that’s a great sign for our overall economic recovery and future growth.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, Doug Schweitzer said, “Alberta is on track for a record year in venture capital and tech investment, creating thousands of jobs and diversifying our economy.”

“This transformative investment from Amazon Web Services clearly demonstrates Alberta is a top destination for tech investment and talent.”

Cloud computing is the delivery of different services through the Internet. Amazon Web Services is one of many tech companies making investments in the province of Alberta.
