Flooding forces closure of Highway 3 east of Fernie

FERNIE, B.C. — Flooding has forced the closure of Hwy-3 about four kilometres east of Fernie, B-C.

Mainroad East Kootenay Crews are on site working to open the road as soon as possible but, there is no estimated time.

A detour is available along Dickens Road, but delays should be expected. Motorists are asked to follow all traffic signage and respect the traffic control personnel.

As well, Drive B.C. indicates a travel advisory is in effect in the Elk Valley and from Elko to Sparwood, including Fernie, due to extreme heavy rain and localized flooding.

Travel is not recommended in that area unless absolutely necessary.

A rainfall warning from Environment Canada remains in effect for the Elk Valley and Kootenay Lake regions, with an additional 40-millimetres expected in the Elk Valley by Monday night.
