Regina edges Hurricanes 3-2 in OT

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — The Regina Pats rolled into town Wednesday night, looking for a win against the Hurricanes and appeared to bring with them a lot of angst that they worked out in penalty minutes.

A minute after puck drop, Alex Geci took a pass from Adam McNutt and the visitors were on the scoreboard. Six minutes later, Geci found that back the Canes net once again and the Pats were up 2-0.

By mid period, the Pats logged the first in a long series of penalties for the evening. The first went to Borya Valis, for a mouth-guard misconduct.

The Hurricanes got to their opponents’ net at 12:49, with Noah Boyko striking the shot and putting the home team on the board.

The remainder of the periods’ action produced more penalties – the Pats drew a trip to the penalty box at the 16:00 mark for Hooking, the Canes Jet Jones was tapped for Holding at 18:311 and three seconds before buzzer, Regina’s Stanislav Svozil drew a Delay of Game.

The period ended with the Pats leading 2-1, although the Canes outshot their opponents 19-13.

The middle frame produced no goals but a long list of penalties – mostly for Regina.

Just a minute into play, Adam McNutt earned a delay of game. AT 8:24, Zane Rowan went to the box for Charging. And at 13:40 Zack Stringer earned himself a major penalty for Cross-checking and a game misconduct. At the same time, Hurricane Trevor Thurston served time for Roughing. The remainder of the period provided no further penalties and no scoring.

As the final 20 minutes of play got underway, it was mere seconds before the Pats’ Tom Cadieux earned a penalty for Holding. The Canes’ Logan Wormald told advantage of following powerplay, netting his fourth goal of the season to even the score 2-2. The rest of the period produced two minor penalties for the Canes but, no further goals. Regulation ended with the tie and game headed into overtime.

Four minutes into extra time, the Canes’ Nolan Bentham pulled in the final penalty of game, for Throwing his stick. The ensuing power play was the chance the Pats needed, as Connor Bedard took the assist from Cole Dubinsky, firing the final goal and a 3-2 win for Regina.

The Hurricanes outshot the Pats 42-35 while Regina racked up 35-penalty minutes compared to eight for Lethbridge. The three stars went to Matthew Kieper, Noah Boyko and Bryan Thomson.

After 18 games, the Hurricanes are 7-10-1-0 in the standings. The next game for the team will be Friday (Nov 26) night, as they host the Edmonton Oil Kings.
