Nov 26, 2021 | 3:14 PM

STANDOFF, AB – Cardston RCMP and Blood Tribe Police have arrested a man on assault charges.

Shortly before 9:30 am on Tuesday, November 23, a Cardston RCMP officer was on the First Nation, looking for individuals who were wanted on outstanding warrants in the community.

They observed a man walking on the road who was known to have warrants related to various offences.

The officer advised the man that he was placing him under arrest.

Despite instructions to drop a long metal pipe that the suspect was holding, he reportedly did not.

An interaction occurred in which the man struck the officer with the pipe.

The officer deployed two tasers, which were unsuccessful in taking the suspect down.

A second police officer arrived on scene and they were able to bring him into custody together.

In addition to the outstanding warrants, Dylan Riley Bird, 27, of the Blood Tribe is charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, and one count each of assaulting a peace officer, obstruction, and failing to comply with a release order.

Following a bail hearing, Bird was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on December 13, 2021.

The RCMP who was struck was taken to hospital and has since been released.
