LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes selected nine players, including seven forwards and two defensemen, in the 2021 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft Thursday.

The Hurricanes held two first-round picks for the first time since 2012. With their first pick in the draft, the ‘Canes selected forward Miguel Marques 10th overall.

From Prince George, BC, Marques has appeared in 16 games this season with the Delta Hockey Academy U17 AAA where he has racked up 64 points (27g-37a) along with 32 penalty minutes. The 5’11, 170- pound forward totaled 15 points (7g-8a) along with six penalty minutes in six games with the St. George’s School U15 Prep.

Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt, says having Marques fall to the Canes at 10th overall, was a “surprise” to him and was positive to see.

With the 17th overall selection, the ‘Canes picked defenseman Tristen Doyle. The Winnipeg, MB product has collected 23points (6g-17a) with 20 penalty minutes in 18 games with the Northern Alberta Xtreme U18 Prep team. Last year, he had seven points (2g-5a) along with eight penalty minutes in just four games.

“We were surprised to be able to pick Doyle at 17,” said MacLachlan. “We like the way he plays and he puts up points and can carry pucks and make plays. He’s a great skater and we see him as a Calen Addison-type player.”

Throughout the ten rounds of the draft, a total of nine players were selected by the organization rounding out the rest including:

Trae Wilke, Landen Ward, Coy Pighin, Kale Tipler, along with the younger brother of Dylan Cozens, the Canes scored big in selecting Luke Cozens.

Other picks included Lucas Minard, Josh Evaschesen.

Though the players were selected by the Hurricanes organization, there are no guarantees that the canes will sign the player themselves or that the player will want to sign with them as well.
