LPS: No immediate risk to schools that received threats

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — After spending most of the day investigating similar alleged threats at two city high schools, Lethbridge police indicate there was no evidence of any immediate threat.

Story background:

On Tuesday (Dec 14), two Lethbridge high schools were evacuated due to alleged threats.

It begin around 8:00-am with alleged threats made towards Winston Churchill High School on the north-side. The Lethbridge School Division evacuated the school and sent students and teachers home and closed the school for the day

By 11:55, a statement from the Lethbridge School Division, reported that staff and students at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI) were also being evacuated and would remain at home for the rest of the day.

“Once individuals have evacuated the building, the school administration and Division office will be working with police to ensure the school is safe. Safety is at the forefront of decision making, and we feel this precautionary measure is necessary.”

LPS continued to investigate at both schools, to determine the veracity of the threats and whether there was any connection to the two incidents.

Both schools were searched but, no evidence was located to suggest any risk to students or staff and that the two incidents were not connected.

Both investigations remain ongoing to determine the identity of the person(s) responsible for the threats.

By mid afternoon, the school District sent out information that students would continue classes as normal on Wednesday and that extracurricular sports will also continue as per usual at LCI.
