Active COVID cases rising provincially in Alberta, falling in South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics from the past four days.

Note: Due to lower COVID-19 case counts in recent weeks, LNN will only be reporting COVID numbers twice per week on Mondays and Fridays. Should the situation change, we will go back to daily reporting.

Over the last four days, 1,732 cases were confirmed across the province for a daily average of 433. To date, there have been 341,023 positive tests in Alberta.

4,431 cases are active while 333,306 people have recovered.

Since the discovery of the Omicron variant, AHS reports that it has been identified in 173 people, three of whom are from the South Zone.

In the South Zone, 59 people contracted COVID in the past four days, or nearly 15 per day. 32 of those, or eight each day, were in Lethbridge.

Active infections provincially rose by 249 but decreased in the South Zone by 37.

Since Monday’s update, 11 Albertans died from COVID with five in the Edmonton Zone, two each in the Central and North Zones, and one each in the South and Calgary Zones. To date, 3,286 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of the M.D. of Taber.

Provincially, 344 patients are currently hospitalized including 68 who have been admitted to intensive care.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 126,277 cases, 2,069 active
    • 110 in hospital, 19 in ICU
    • 855 deaths (one new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 105,626 cases, 1,283 active
    • 105 in hospital, 36 in ICU
    • 1,327 deaths (five new)
  • North Zone – 46,864 cases, 381 active
    • 42 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 405 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 38,744 cases, 493 active
    • 63 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 409 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 23,474 cases, 200 active
    • 24 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 290 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past four days:

  • Lethbridge – 7,292 cases (32 new), 82 active, 62 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 2,676 cases (17 new), 39 active, eight deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,394 cases (seven new), 19 active, 22 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,215 cases (eight new), 24 active, 32 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 4,621 cases (10 new), 35 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,106 cases (two new), five active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,019 cases (seven new), 33 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 1,872 cases, seven active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,305 cases (one new), five active, 18 deaths (one new)
  • Cypress County – 873 cases (two new), eight active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 799 cases (one new), eight active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 660 cases (one new), two active, 11 deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 576 cases, zero active, seven deaths
  • County of Newell – 526 cases (two new), 12 active, eight deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 345 cases, zero active, five deaths
