Swift Current Broncos hand Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 loss Monday night

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – Following a break for Christmas, the Lethbridge Hurricanes were back on the ice Monday, December 27, on the road against the Swift Current Broncos.

FIRST PERIOD

Just 1:42 into the game, Lethbridge’s Jett Jones was issued a minor penalty for interference. Minutes later, at 7:04, teammate Alex Thacker was called for roughing.

The opening frame’s final penalty was issued to Swift Current’s Rayan Bettahar at 14:11 – a minor for holding. Before the buzzer sounded, the Broncos went up 1-0 thanks to a goal from Josh Filmon at the 17:56 mark, his 13th of the season.

SECOND PERIOD

The Hurricanes were extra motivated going into the second period, with Logan Barlage scoring his sixth of the season just 35 seconds into the frame. Joe Arntsen and Logan McCutcheon earned the assists.

The Broncos responded quickly, though, with Brady Birnie scoring at 1:02 to put Swift Current up 2-1.

Just over a minute later, Trevor Thurston scored his third of the season at the 2:54 mark to tie the game! Thurston was assisted by Jett Jones and Reid MacKay.

At 15:29, the whistle was called on Swift Current’s Braeden Lewis, who received a minor for kneeing. Trevor Thurston was then issued a minor penalty for interference at the 18:01 mark for Lethbridge.

On the power play, Josh Filmon scored his second of the game to put the Broncos up 3-2 at the 18:07 mark. At the sound of the buzzer, 20:00 mark, Lethbridge’s Logan Barlage received a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

THIRD PERIOD

Entering the final period of the game, Swift Current led 3-2. The period saw a flurry of penalties before one final goal was scored.

1:03 into the frame, Thurston was issued a minor for checking to the head. This was followed with another minor for roughing from the Lethbridge skater at the 8:19 mark.

Swift Current’s Caleb Wyrostok was also given a minor for the scuffle with Trevor Thurston.

Tensions were high and at the 9:05 mark, Hurricane Joe Arntsen was called for high sticking, Swift Current’s Kayden Sadhra-Kang was called for holding and teammate Mathew Ward received a minor penalty for roughing.

At the 11:37 mark, Rayan Bettahar (Swift Current) was issued a minor penalty for tripping and just under two minutes later, at 13:13, Lethbridge’s Barlage received a minor for tripping.

Before the game came to a close, Josh Filmon added to his impressive resume for the night, completing a hat-trick thanks to an empty-net goal at the 19:00 mark to give Swift Current the 4-2 victory.

Filmon was rewarded for his efforts with being named the first star of the game, followed by his teammates Isaac Poulter and Mathew Ward.
