RCMP respond to train derailment near Barons

Dec 29, 2021 | 11:04 AM

BARONS, AB – A train derailment near the village of Barons has caused a traffic disruption this morning.

On December 29, at around 9:30 a.m., Picture Butte RCMP and fire crews responded to the incident near Highway 23 and Township Road 120. CP Rail and a Hazmat Team from Calgary are on scene as well.

The RCMP says the train, which was northbound, reportedly had an engine derail and a few empty fuel cars tip over. The derailed engine, as a result of the angle it is currently resting at, is causing diesel fuel to leak from the fuel entry point.

No injuries have been reported.

Traffic on Highway 23 is being re-routed to allow crews to work and is expected to last several hours.

Northbound traffic is being re-routed at Highway 23 and Township Road 114. Southbound traffic is being re-routed at Highway 23 and Township Road 120.

The public is being asked to avoid the area of the derailment as crews continue to work at the scene.
