New mobile app launched by Alberta RCMP to keep residents informed

EDMONTON, AB – A new mobile app aimed at keeping Albertans informed on what’s happening in their community has been launched by the Alberta RCMP.

Through the application, Albertans can do things like see a list of RCMP detachments in their region, find contact information, stay up to date on RCMP-related news, statistics, community initiatives and view a crime map. Additionally, residents can report non-emergent crimes they may witness in their neighborhood directly through the app.

Chief Superintendent Peter Tewfik, Officer-in-Charge of the Alberta RCMP’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Branch said the RCMP has heard from residents that “they wanted an easy way to report some crimes online.”

“While our online crime reporting portal has been available for some time through the web, we’ve included a link to our portal in order to lower the barriers to reporting some crime types to the RCMP.”

He noted that users cannot request emergency assistance via the app and if you see a crime in progress, the first step should be to call 911. Tewfik further explained that the application includes a list of types of crimes that can be reported.

He said, “the portal actually walks through the different kinds of crime types that can be managed and posted. Those calls still go through to our call-back unit, which are police officers that we have that will respond to those calls.”

“They’re just police officers that are not able to be out on the front lines due to a variety of restrictions that they have, but they actually both process, and investigate and respond to those calls that can be reported through the app. It’s not intended for emergency calls. 911 is still the correct number to call.”

Users of the app also have instant access to links to partner law enforcement agencies, mental health supports, CrimeStoppers and the Alberta RCMP social media accounts.

Tewfik said, “while the app will not replace existing online tools, it will supplement current RCMP web content and consolidate information into one mobile source.”

“Our intent with this app is to help remove barriers in accessing important information that, while already available online, is now available in one convenient place, literally at your fingertips.”

He added that the app is “intended to give users the opportunity to stay connected to local law enforcement and policing initiatives.”

“It is the Alberta RCMP’s hope that this app will better inform and support the communities we serve.”

The mobile app is available on iOS and Android smart devices.
