Walker beats Scheidegger to win provincial women’s curling crown

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB. — Laura Walker edged Casey Scheidegger 6-5 in a close, tense women’s final Sunday at the Best in Alberta curling provincials played at Grande Prairie’s Bonnetts Energy Centre.

This is the second Alberta championship win for Walker’s rink.

“It feels awesome but I’m mostly just really proud of the game we put together today. To give up two in the first end and then to turn around and battle the scoreboard the way we did to have hammer in the tenth end, that was something pretty special.”

Walker’s team had trailed 3-1 after the fourth end.

“We certainly ramped it up in the second half. We had a little bit of a slow start, and we know that this whole week we’ve played better in our second half.”

“We just tried to stay patient with ourselves and with each other and knew that if we could put together the kind of second half of the game that we had done earlier in the week that we would put ourselves in a good position.”

The Scheidegger rink includes Grande Prairie curlers Kristie Moore at lead and Cary-Anne McTaggart at third. Walker also has a connection to the Peace. Her husband is Beaverlodge product and Team Gushue lead Geoff Walker.

“It’s been a lot of fun. People that I’ve never met, it feels like I know them when they start speaking to me and the pride they have in Geoff then translates to pride in me so you can see that it means a lot.”

Walker’s team also won the Alberta title in 2020 and was chosen to represent Alberta at last year’s national championship.

The 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is set for January 28 to February 6 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

“I hate to say this, but the biggest thing that we’re going to do right now is try to avoid getting COVID, and train and get ourselves ready as safely as we can and get ourselves safely to Thunder Bay,” added Walker.
