708 Albertans currently hospitalized with COVID, rising steadily

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Tuesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

4,704 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 417,533. Of those, 58,613 cases are active while 355,568 people have recovered.

With 12,201 tests administered in that time, the positivity rate was 38.6 per cent.

In the South Zone, 228 people tested positive with 104 in Lethbridge and 55 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections for the region went up by 118 and in Lethbridge by 58.

Since yesterday’s update, eight Albertans died from COVID with three each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones, and one each in the South and North Zones. To date, 3,352 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 708 patients are currently hospitalized including 80 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks increases of 73 and eight respectively from Monday’s report.

Hospitalizations bottomed out from the fourth wave on December 23. On that day, nearly three weeks ago, there were 318 COVID patients in hospital including 63 in ICU.

While approximately 19.59 per cent of new COVID cases in the province are amount those who are unvaccinated, AHS reports that they make up 37 per cent of those in hospital with the virus.

  • Calgary Zone – 164,135 cases, 28,191 active
    • 289 in hospital, 32 in ICU
    • 881 deaths (three new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 133,320 cases, 21,321 active
    • 237 in hospital, 30 in ICU
    • 1,341 deaths (three new)
  • North Zone – 49,989 cases, 2,529 active
    • 67 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 417 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 42,738 cases, 3,302 active
    • 85 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 420 deaths
  • South Zone – 26,379 cases, 2,446 active
    • 30 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 293 deaths (one new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past four days:

  • Lethbridge – 8,593 cases (104 new), 1,101 active, 65 deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 3,239 cases (45 new), 454 active, nine deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,783 cases (33 new), 359 active, 23 deaths (one new)
    • South Lethbridge – 2,571 cases (27 new), 295 active, 33 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 5,350 cases (55 new), 601 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,219 cases (11 new), 104 active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,159 cases (six new), 108 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 2,019 cases (15 new), 129 active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,380 cases (seven new), 61 active, 18 deaths
  • Cypress County – 944 cases (three new), 57 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 855 cases (four new), 52 active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 763 cases (12 new), 88 active, 11 deaths
