Active COVID cases surpass 61,000 in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

6,789 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 424,322. Of those, 61,229 cases are active while 359,726 people have recovered.

With 17,815 tests conducted over the past day, the positivity rate was 38.1 per cent.

In the South Zone, 299 people tested positive with 139 in Lethbridge.

Active infections went up by 182 in the region and by 85 in the city.

Since yesterday’s update, 15 Albertans died from COVID with seven in the Calgary Zone, three in the Edmonton Zone, two each in the South and Central Zones, and one in the North Zone. To date, 3,367 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of the County of Warner and the Crowsnest Pass.

Provincially, 748 patients are currently hospitalized including 82 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks increases of 40 and nine respectively from Tuesday’s story.

Approximately 80.27 per cent of new COVID cases are among those who are fully immunized, but they make up just 58 per cent of those hospitalized. 85.6 per cent of Albertans are fully vaccinated.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 166,942 cases, 28,852 active
    • 304 in hospital, 34 in ICU
    • 888 deaths (seven new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 136,302 cases, 22,727 active
    • 264 in hospital, 32 in ICU
    • 1,344 deaths (three new)
  • North Zone – 50,407 cases, 2,807 active
    • 70 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 418 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 43,033 cases, 3,430 active
    • 81 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 422 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 26,678 cases, 2,628 active
    • 29 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 295 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. The numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past 24 hours:

  • Lethbridge – 8,732 cases (139 new), 1,186 active, 65 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 3,292 cases (53 new), 484 active, nine deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 2,827 cases (44 new), 385 active, 23 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 2,613 cases (33 new), 323 active, 33 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 5,402 cases (52 new), 618 active, 78 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,237 cases (18 new), 117 active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,174 cases (15 new), 115 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 2,045 cases (26 new), 154 active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,393 cases (13 new), 70 active, 18 deaths
  • Cypress County – 951 cases (seven new), 63 active, six deaths
