LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man has learned his fate following a pair of assaults last year.

In Lethbridge Provincial Court on Wednesday, Dwayne Develing Good Rider, 44, plead guilty to assaulting a peace officer, assault, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

On April 26, 2021, members of the Diversion Outreach Team (DOT) were called to Galt Gardens to assist individuals who were having difficulties.

They found Good Rider unresponsive on the ground and they tried to wake him with the assistance of two security guards.

When Good Rider came to, Crown Prosecutor Adam Zelmer says he became “agitated and violent and aggressive.”

He grabbed a silver leatherman tool and pulled out the saw blade, moving into a “fighting position.”

The DOT team was able to grab the tool.

While members waited for police to arrive, another person walked by, who was kicked in the head by Good Rider. This person sustained red marks on his head but no further injuries.

Cst. Jason Carrier was one of the LPS officers who attended the call. Zelmer said, when Carrier tried to approach Good Rider, Good Rider shouted to the officer, “If you touch me, I’m going to knock you out.”

The constable searched the suspect and Good Rider repeatedly tried to bite Carrier’s forearm and hands, striking him a number of times.

With the assistance of another police officer, Good Rider was apprehended.

He was sentenced to 18 months of probation and will attend a residential treatment program as directed by his probation officer.

The crown informed the court that, through prior jail sentences, there had been no significant positive changes in Good Rider’s behaviour, so they wanted to try a different route this time.

He has been diagnosed with FASD and suffers from a number of related life challenges, but recently, has reportedly been committed to being sober and living a more honest life.

Good Rider has been attending counselling and was the one to inform his lawyer that he wanted to go to a residential treatment program.
