LETHBRIDGE, AB – Southern Albertans came together in a big way to support the Salvation Army over the holiday season.

Between their Christmas Kettles and mailouts, Community Ministries Officer Donald Bladen says they received approximately $200,000 in donations.

He told LNN that he is very pleased with the results and is grateful to all of those who contributed.

The local crew in Lethbridge had set a goal of $250,000 this year.

“Although we fell a little bit short, I am really quite pleased with how well the community responded, and I think that goes to show the trust that people have in us to deliver effective ministries and to really care for people, so I can’t be any more thankful than what I am.”

Across the Alberta and Northern Territories Region, the Christmas Kettle Campaign raised $2,484,752.

The money will go to a variety of initiatives including food banks, shelter and housing resources, school lunch programs, addiction recovery programs, counselling, hot meals, toys, and more.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Bladen says many non-profits such as the Salvation Army have seen more people turning to them for support.

“Overall, yes, there is an increased need, there is an increased variety of need, and I think people are really feeling the pressure, so again, just very much appreciative of the support that we’ve received in order to pass that on to the people who need it.”

The Salvation Army operates in 20 communities in Alberta and the territories.
