LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was quite the shock to start the day for Lethbridge drivers.

Early Wednesday, crews responded to a burst water main in the eastbound lane of 6 Avenue South, at the intersection of 8 Street South.

The burst resulted in a large sinkhole forming on the road and a closure that is expected to last for a few days.

A driver on scene told LNN that he was on his way to work and as he was set to turn left on to 8 Street South, off of 6 Avenue South, he heard a loud “boom”. He parked his vehicle in a nearby gas station lot and noticed a popped tire.

Emergency crews and city crews were then called out to the scene. A second vehicle also suffered damage.

While crews repair the roadway, eastbound 6 Avenue South will be closed between 7 Street and 8 Street. Additionally, one lane of westbound traffic will stay open at this time but could close as work progresses.

The City of Lethbridge says the work is expected to be finished by end of day January 17, weather permitting.

The closure may impact a Lethbridge Transit route, so users are advised to call 311 during business hours about possible stop closures and/or scheduling adjustments.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution in the area and follow posted detours.
