Lethbridge’s Christmas Tree Collection taking place Saturday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you’ve got a Christmas tree you’re still looking to get rid of, the City of Lethbridge has you covered.

The city’s annual Christmas Tree Collection Program takes place Saturday, January 15.

For the last 28 years, the city has teamed with a local youth group to make sure that Christmas trees continue to give after the holiday season. Since the initiative started, over 80,000 Christmas trees have been diverted from the landfill and turned into environmentally friendly mulch.

Residents can take part in the program by ensuring their trees are visible, stripped of all decorations and out by 7 a.m. on January 15 to be collected. Trees should be placed by the regular garbage collection location of a residence (front or alley), but distanced from the blue and black carts.

A local youth group will be collecting trees from the entire city. Depending on weather conditions and equipment availability, the pick-up may stretch over a few days.

This year, Senator Buchanan Elementary School will be leading the charge with family and volunteers to support their fundraising activities. Youth groups interested in participating in future collections are encouraged to contact the city’s Waste & Recycling Services to find out more details about making a submission.

The collected trees are chipped for mulch. Mulch is available at no charge on a first-come, first-serve basis while supply lasts at Peenaquim Park in the parking lot adjacent to the dog park. The city notes that mulch is a useful addition to planting beds to reduce the need for watering and weeding.

Christmas trees can also be composted at the Waste & Recycling Centre any time of the year. Residents can take advantage of the free Saturday program (free disposal for the first 250 kilograms ever Saturday) to avoid tipping fees at the landfill.
