Active COVID cases fall in Alberta Tuesday for first time in weeks

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Tuesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

3,279 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 455,660. Of those, 70,223 cases are active while 382,025 people have recovered.

With 8,995 tests conducted over the past day, the positivity rate was 36.4 per cent.

In the South Zone, 152 people tested positive.

Active infections fell provincially by 2,145 and in the region by 30.

Due to technical problems on AHS’ website, the local breakdown was not available Monday so community-specific numbers are for the last four days of reporting. In that time, 270 people contracted COVID in Lethbridge for a daily average of 68.

Since yesterday’s update, nine Albertans died from COVID with three each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones, two in the South Zone, and one in the North Zone. To date, 3,412 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for one resident each of North and South Lethbridge.

Provincially, 1,089 patients are currently hospitalized including 104 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks increases of 82 and 10 respectively from Monday’s report.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone in Alberta:

  • Calgary Zone – 183,230 cases, 33,975 active
    • 420 in hospital, 37 in ICU
    • 907 deaths (three new)
  • Edmonton Zone – 146,646 cases, 24,985 active
    • 464 in hospital, 43 in ICU
    • 1,363 deaths (three new)
  • North Zone – 51,667 cases, 3,133 active
    • 65 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 420 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 45,157 cases, 4,357 active
    • 99 in hospital, 10 in ICU
    • 423 deaths
  • South Zone – 27,953 cases, 3,033 active
    • 41 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 299 deaths (two new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone. As the local breakdown was not available Monday, the numbers in brackets show new cases or deaths over the past four days:

  • Lethbridge – 9,302 cases (270 new), 1,361 active, 68 deaths (two new)
    • West Lethbridge – 3,517 cases (115 new), 547 active, nine deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 3,013 cases (77 new), 453 active, 24 deaths (one new)
    • South Lethbridge – 2,772 cases (78 new), 364 active, 35 deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 5,628 cases (115 new), 610 active, 79 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,359 cases (48 new), 214 active, 24 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,233 cases (13 new), 137 active, 20 deaths
  • Cardston County – 2,116 cases (36 new), 196 active, 40 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,430 cases (24 new), 79 active, 18 deaths
  • Cypress County – 983 cases (18 new), 75 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 884 cases (16 new), 56 active, five deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 833 cases (33 new), 125 active, 11 deaths
