Active COVID cases drop significantly in Alberta over past four days

LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE: This article has been revised since its original publication.

The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Tuesday, partly covering statistics from the past four days.

11,225 cases were confirmed across the province for a daily average of 2,806, bringing the total to 477,841. Of those, 51,157 cases are active while 423,201 people have recovered.

Active cases in the province have dropped by over 10,000 since our last report.

It should be noted that, on January 10, the province limited the number of people who can get a PCR test from AHS for COVID-19 to only those in high-risk settings. This likely means that the amount of people who have actually contracted COVID since then would be higher than what is being reported by the province.

In the South Zone, 1,457 people tested positive over the weekend and Monday for a daily average of 364.

Over that time, 273 people in Lethbridge caught COVID or 68 each day.

Since Friday’s update, 54 Albertans died from the virus including 20 in the Edmonton Zone, 19 in the Calgary Zone, seven in the North Zone, and four each in the Central and South Zones.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of South Lethbridge, Brooks, Cardston County, and the M.D. of Pincher Creek.

To date, 3,483 people in the province have died as a result of COVID.

Provincially, 1,377 patients are currently hospitalized including 111 who have been admitted to intensive care. From our last report on Friday, this marks an increase of 186 for hospitalization and by four for ICU.
