COVID hospitalizations continue to rise in Alberta

Feb 2, 2022 | 3:54 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

3,024 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 498,977. Of those, 34,877 cases are active while 460,507 people have recovered.

It should be noted that, on January 10, the province limited the number of people who can get a PCR test from AHS for COVID-19 to only those in high-risk settings. This likely means that the amount of people who have actually contracted COVID since then would be higher than what is being reported by the province.

In the South Zone, 232 people tested positive with 83 in Lethbridge and 51 in Medicine Hat.

Active infections went up by 44 and by four in Lethbridge.

Since yesterday’s update, 14 Albertans died from COVID with five each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones, two in the North Zone, and one each in the South and Central Zones. To date, 3,593 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a resident of Brooks.

Provincially, 1,598 patients are currently hospitalized including 106 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks an increase of 13 for hospitalizations and a decrease of three for ICU since our last report on Tuesday.

Below are graphs showing how COVID-19 in Alberta has trended since the start of the pandemic, which can also be accessed with more detail here.
