Hurricanes pull out “seconds remaining” 5-4 win over Regina

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — After a 5-2 win against the Swift current Broncos n Wednesday night at the Enmax, the home team was definitely hoping for another home win Friday night. This time, against the Regina Pats.

The opening frame produced a single goal just past the two-minute mark, courtesy of Regina’s Ryker Evans. The majority of the 20 minutes had the Canes in penalty kill mode. In the final ten seconds of play, Joe Arntsen racked up two penalties for boarding and roughing. The buzzer went on a one nothing lead for Regina.

The next 20 minutes provided significant scoring action. Within 29-seconds of puck drop, Regina’s Cole Dubinsky planted a powerplay shot, to up his team’s lead to 2-0.

However, the next five minutes belonged to team Hurricane. At 1:33, the Canes rushed Regina’s net but it was Alex Thacker who made the short-handed goal, cutting the Pats lead in half. A mere 90-seconds later, Noah Chadwick charted his first goal of the season on an assist from Logan McCutcheon. Then at 6:33, the Canes’ Yegor Klavdiev single-handedly lobbed the puck at Regina’s net for the Hurricanes to move ahead 3-2.

With less than two minutes remaining, Regina’s Ryker Evans planted his second goal of the evening to tie the game on a power play.

In the final frame, the goals didn’t begin to appear until 9:23, when Justin Hall took the puck from Ty Nash to take the Canes to a 4-3 lead. The score was short lived though. Two minutes later, Regina’s Stanislav Svozil had a game tying goal, taking the score to 4-4.

In a heart pounding end to the game, with just two seconds on the clock, Canes Captain Joe Arntsen, found the back of the Pats’ net, to give the Hurricanes a 5-4.

The Hurricanes outshot Regina 37-27. The games’ three stars: #1 went to the Canes’ Alex Thacker, #2 was Regina’s Cole Dubinsky and #3 went to Hurricane Justin Hall.

After 38-games, the Canes are 17-18-2-1. The team’s next game goes 6:00-pm Saturday (Feb 5) in Swift Current
