NANTON, AB – Three municipalities in southern Alberta are joining forces in the hopes of replacing the Community Health Centre in Nanton.

The Municipal District of Ranchland No. 66, Town of Nanton and Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26 have announced an initiative to start consultations with Alberta Health Services to replace the facility in Nanton with a new one.

In 2012, the three communities collectively purchased the Community Health Centre in Nanton, located at 2216 20 Street. As part of the Inter-Municipal Co-Ownership Agreement set in 2012, a ‘Nanton Health Centre Management Committee’ was formed. It includes representatives from all three municipalities who manage the operation of the health centre.

The facility serves residents in the region and, according to a release issued February 18, 2022, has three medical doctors and a locum (a doctor who stands in temporarily for another physician), a nurse practitioner, lab services, physiotherapy, programs for diabetes, immunization, nutrition counseling, cardiology and other valued community health services.

Multiple studies have been conducted on the site, including the 2015 Alberta Health Services Functional Programme Space Summary and the 2019 Preventative Maintenance Condition Assessment. The municipalities noted that these studies, along with user feedback, indicate that the current health centre has reached the end of its lifespan as a medical clinic and that a replacement facility is needed.

Reeve Maryanne Sandberg with the M.D. of Willow Creek No. 26 said, “this facility serves many residents in our region and we look forward to working collaboratively with the Town of Nanton and the Municipal District of Ranchland on this project.”

Nanton’s mayor, Jennifer Handley said, “we will be there to support the dedicated volunteers of the Nanton Health Clinic Committee move this much needed project forward.”

Ron Davis, Reeve of the M.D. of Ranchland No. 66 said, “together with the MD of Willow Creek and the Town of Nanton, the MD of Ranchland supports the regional initiative to construct a new Nanton Community Health Centre.”

The municipalities are intent on initiating a project to construct a new health centre that will include negotiating a long-term lease with Alberta Health Services that will provide sufficient revenues to permit the construction of a new facility, which will meet the long-term needs of the region.
