COVID hospitalizations in Alberta fall by 118 since Thursday

Feb 23, 2022 | 4:24 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics from the past five days.

On Tuesday, AHS only provided “estimated numbers” for the long weekend, so today’s update includes stats from Friday to Tuesday.

In that time, 3,134 cases were confirmed in the province for a daily average of 627. Alberta has seen 523,104 cases throughout the pandemic.

11,189 cases are active while 508,032 people have recovered.

It should be noted that, on January 10, the province limited the number of people who can get a PCR test from AHS for COVID-19 to only those in high-risk settings. This likely means that the amount of people who have actually contracted COVID since then would be higher than what is being reported by the province.

In the South Zone, 288 people tested positive for a daily average of 57.6. That includes 106 in Lethbridge or 21.2 each day.

Active infections in the region went up by 58 but fell for the city by 146.

Since Friday’s update, 53 Albertans died from COVID or just over 10 per day. This includes 17 each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones, 10 in the Central Zone, six in the North Zone, and three in the South Zone. To date, 3,883 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of North and South Lethbridge as well as Medicine Hat.

Provincially, 1,373 patients are currently hospitalized including 90 who have been admitted to intensive care. Compared to our most recent report with full numbers on Thursday, this marks decreases of 118 for hospitalizations and 26 for ICU.

Below are graphs showing how COVID-19 in Alberta has trended since the start of the pandemic, which can also be accessed with more detail here.
