LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns are mourning the loss of a former coach.

Cal O’Brien passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the age of 74. Pronghorn Athletics stated that, “Cal was a beloved husband, father, teacher and coach.”

He was a long-time assistant coach. O’Brien served as the head coach of the U of L women’s basketball team during the 1986-87 season and men’s basketball program during the 1988-89 season.

Recently, O’Brien was inducted into the Pronghorn Hall of Fame as an assistant coach with the 1985-86 women’s basketball team that won a CIAU (U Sports) bronze medal – the first and only in the program’s history.

Pronghorn Athletics stated, “Cal made a positive impact on the players he dealt with and his legacy lives in those positively affected by him.” A funeral is set to be held in May.
