Hurricanes lose close matchup 3-2 to Winnipeg Wednesday night

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a tight contest, but the Lethbridge Hurricanes were unable to pull off the comeback win against the Winnipeg ICE Wednesday night.

In front of a crowd of 2,534 fans at the ENMAX Centre, the ‘Canes fell 3-2 against the visiting Winnipeg club.

FIRST PERIOD

Winnipeg’s Carson Lambos was issued a minor penalty for tripping early on, at the 1:27 mark. That did not phase the ICE, though, as Skyler Bruce scored his 13th goal of the season at 3:33, putting Winnipeg up 1-0.

At the 6:26 mark, Lethbridge’s Corson Hopwo was sent to the box for boarding. His teammate Easton Kovacs was issued a minor at 13:56 for delay of game.

Before the buzzer sounded, the ICE went up 2-0 thanks to a goal from Conor Geekie at the 19:48 mark.

SECOND PERIOD

Seven seconds into the second period, Lethbridge’s Chase Pauls was given a minor for kneeing. At 4:09, Winnipeg’s Maximilian Streule received a minor for interference.

A too many men on the ice penalty for the Hurricanes at 7:40 was served by Tyson Laventure.

10:50 into the frame, the ICE went up 3-0, courtesy of Matthew Savoie’s 22nd goal of the season. His teammate Streule was issued a double minor for slew-footing at the 12:10 mark.

THIRD PERIOD

2:47 into the game’s final period, Lethbridge’s Hayden Smith received a minor for tripping. Minutes later, at 4:55, a too many men on the ice penalty for Winnipeg was served by Jakin Smallwood.

The Hurricanes came alive in the third, with Corson Hopwo scoring his ninth of the season at the 8:38 mark. Kade Nolan then scored at 10:35. Lethbridge was only down by one!

However, victory would not come the home team’s way and once the final buzzer sounded, Winnipeg left the ice with a 3-2 win.

UP NEXT

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are back in action Friday, February 25. They’re once again on home ice at the ENMAX Centre and will host the Calgary Hitmen before a Saturday matchup against Medicine Hat.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, travels to Medicine Hat for a meeting with the Tigers Friday night, February 25.
