Bouvry Export’s Safe Food for Canadians license suspended by CFIA

Feb 25, 2022 | 10:50 AM

FORT MACLEOD, AB – Bouvry Exports Calgary Ltd. has had its Safe Food for Canadians (SFC) license suspended.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) noted Friday that the suspension for the Fort Macleod-based meat processer was effective as of February 17, 2022. While the suspension is in effect, the license holder cannot conduct any activity for which the license, #3H7GFH7D, was issued.

The CFIA stated that the license was suspended because Bouvry Exports failed to comply with sections 49 and 50(2) of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations with regards to operational sanitation procedures to prevent cross-contamination of food. Bouvry Exports also failed to comply with sections 47(2), 86, 88 and 89(1)(c) of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations with respect to preventive control measures for the detection of E. coli and the detection of temperature deviations in carcasses. Additionally, the CFIA stated that a risk of injury to the public could result if Bouvry Exports continued to conduct the activities identified in its license.

At this time, no related food recalls have been announced.

The suspension will be lifted if the CFIA determines that corrective measures have been taken by Bouvry Exports. If action is not taken within 90 days following the suspension, the license could be cancelled by the CFIA. Th agency may also cancel the license on other grounds set out in section 39 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations. Cancellation can take place after the license holder has been notified of the grounds for cancellation and provided with an opportunity to be heard.

Safe Food for Canadians licenses can be suspended:

  • For failure to comply with the Safe Food for Canadians Act, the Food and Drugs Act and their related regulations;
  • For default of payment of any fee related to the license;
  • If risk of injury to the public may result from continuing to conduct the licensed activity.

License suspensions and cancellations are published on the CFIA’s website.
