LETHBRIDGE, AB — The City of Lethbridge is easing COVID-19 requirements for its staff following the Alberta Government’s action to lift public health measures.

Starting Tuesday, March 1, Albertans no longer have to provide proof of vaccination or wear face masks in most areas, and gathering limits have been removed.

Jason Elliott, People and Culture Manager at the City of Lethbridge, says city staff will not be required to wear masks or provide proof of vaccination.

Elliot states that the majority of city staff never left work due to mandatory health restrictions that had been previously implemented.

Masking is optional Elliot says, “we will certainly encourage staff to do what they feel they need to do and want to do, to ensure their own personal health and safety.”

Fire and EMS staff fall under the provincial banner through Alberta Health Services (AHS). Elliot also states the Lethbridge Airport will follow federal rules, as it falls under the Canadian Government jurisdiction.

In Lethbridge, as part of Alberta’s Step 2 of lifting restrictions, there will still be masking requirements in high-risk settings, such as AHS facilities, continuing care centres, and public transit.

“Public transit is still under a masking requirement, and obviously we will continue to follow that requirement as it relates to masking in other areas,” Elliot adds.

As well, isolation remains mandatory for anyone with COVID symptoms or a positive test result.

The province says Step 3 will happen based on hospitalizations continuing to fall. The next step will eventually remove the remaining restrictions:

  • COVID-19-specific measures in continuing care and acute care settings and on public transit will be removed
  • Mandatory isolation becomes a recommendation only
