Police say online harassment campaign appears to be targeting Russian Calgarians

Mar 3, 2022 | 11:36 AM

CALGARY, AB – The invasion of Ukraine appears to be having consequences for Calgarians of Russian descent.

Calgary police say that there have been multiple reports from the public since Tuesday about what is believed to be hate speech and harassment targeting Russian Calgarians on social media.

The service says patrol officers, as well as its hate crimes and extremism team, are investigating.

Hate crimes are those motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate based on a number of factors such as race, ethnicity, and language.

The reports of online attacks come less than a week after vandalism at a Russian Orthodox church.

Red paint was poured on the front doors of the church last Saturday.

“Hate-motivated crimes have no place in our community, and we will not tolerate criminal behaviour associated with hate speech and harassment,” Sgt. Matt Messenger of the hate crimes and extremism team said in the release.

“We encourage anyone who believes they have been the victim of a hate crime, or who may have witnessed one, to please come forward and report it to police.”
