Hurricanes fall 6-3 to the Wheat Kings

Mar 5, 2022 | 12:36 AM

The Lethbridge Hurricanes outshot the Brandon Wheat Kings but still faced a 6-3 loss Friday.

The match-up at Westoba Place in Brandon is the latest in a seven-game road trip for the ‘Canes that continues in Regina Saturday.

It was a fast-paced game that saw Brandon get the first goal on a power play. Jett Jones tied it up just 1:25 later, with his 13th goal of the season. Logan McCutcheon and Yegor Klavdiev earned assists on the goal.

The ‘Canes pulled ahead later in the first period, when Ty Nash made it 2-1 with assists from Brayden Edwards and Tyson Laventure.

Brandon responded when Jake Chiasson picked a puck out of the air to tie it up again at 2-2 after the first period.

The Wheat Kings took advantage of more power plays in the second period to take a 4-2 lead, but then Jett Jones roofed a backhander passed by Ethan Kruger to end the period 4-3.

That was the last goal by the Hurricanes in the game. The Wheat Kings scored two more goals in the third period, including a turnover behind the net that lead to a hat-trick goal for Brandon’s Nolan Ritchie, and an empty-netter with just 10 seconds left, to make the final score 6-3 for the Wheat Kings.

Despite the final score, the Hurricanes outshot the Wheat Kings 44-33 and hit the goal post five times throughout the game. See the game highlights here.

The three stars of the game were:
1) Wheat Kings – #10 Nolan Ritchie (3 goals, 1 assist)
2) Wheat Kings – #19 Jake Chiasson (1 goal, 1 assist)
3) Hurricanes – #17 Jett Jones (2 goals)

The ‘Canes hit the ice again in Regina on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against the Pats, and continue their road-trip in Prince Albert on Tuesday, March 8.
