U of L women’s basketball team off to Canada West Final Four, men fall in quarterfinals

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns women’s basketball team is one win away from the finals of the Canada West post-season.

The playoffs started this weekend and the Pronghorns picked up two wins to secure their spot in the semi-finals later this month. On Saturday, March 5, the team defeated the University of Manitoba 80-77.

Jessica Haenni led the way for the U of L, scoring 26 points on 10-18 shooting. She also contributed two rebounds and two assists to the team’s nail-biting victory. Amy Mazutinec was Lethbridge’s second leading scorer with 20 points.

Lauren Bartlett and Autumn Agar both scored 15 points for the Manitoba Bisons.

In the quarterfinals Sunday, March 6, the Pronghorns face the Trinity Western Spartans. In Sunday’s matchup, it was Haily Weaver who led the ‘Horns with 22 points.

Haenni followed up her 26-point performance with 14 points in Lethbridge’s 76-67 win.

The U of L’s impressive play earned them a spot in the Final Four. They will face the University of Saskatchewan on March 18. The Canada West women’s basketball championship game will be on March 19.

PRONGHORNS MEN’S TEAM

The U of L Pronghorns men’s team was not as successful as the women’s club.

The team made it to the quarterfinals Saturday but fell to the University of Victoria.

The ‘Horns men’s team started the tournament off Friday against the UBC Okanagan Heat. Deng Dak had 24 points to lead Lethbridge to a 91-81 victory and a place in the quarterfinals against the Vikes.

On Saturday, the Vikes were too much for Lethbridge and claimed the 79-55 win to punch their ticket to the Canada West Final Four.
